What’s the Difference Between Copper, Coax, and Fiber-Optic Cables?
If you’ve ever wondered why your internet feels slow, there’s a good chance it comes down to the kind of cable your internet runs on.
There are three main types of cables that internet service providers use: copper, coax, and fiber. We’re here to help differentiate them, so you can have a better idea of how your internet service functions.
Copper (DSL)
Copper cables were originally made for landline phones. Internet providers started using them for DSL back in the day. But in the big 2025, this tech is outdated.
Copper sends data through electrical signals, and loses strength the farther it travels. That means if you’re not right next to the central hub, your speeds drop. Even at their best, you’re looking at slower speeds that struggle to keep up with streaming, video calls, or anything more than basic browsing.
Coax (Cable Internet)
This is what a lot of people have today. Coax cables were made for cable TV, and they’re still used for internet in many areas. It’s better than copper, but it has some downsides too.
While coax can give you pretty good download speeds (sometimes up to 1 Gbps), it’s usually a shared connection. If your neighbors are all online at the same time, such as during the evening when everyone’s home from school and work, it can slow down. Also, upload speeds tend to be way lower, which isn’t ideal if you’re working from home or gaming online.
Fiber-Optic
Fiber-optic cables are the real deal. They use light to send data through tiny strands of glass or plastic. That means speeds are insanely fast and super reliable.
What makes fiber stand out? It’s not just the speed. It’s that you get the same high-speed performance whether you’re downloading or uploading, which we refer to as symmetrical speeds. Plus, it’s not affected by things like distance or weather, or shared with your neighbors. Fiber is built for today’s technological demands and tomorrow’s too.
What should you go with?
If you’re still on copper or coax, it might be time to think about upgrading. Fiber gives you better speed, stronger reliability, and a smoother experience across the board, especially if your home has multiple people using Wi-Fi all at once.
At FastBridge Fiber, we’re all about bringing 100% fiber-optic internet service to local communities so you can do more without waiting on a connection that can’t keep up, all for a more affordable price.
