Why Am I Not Getting the Advertised Speed?

You signed up for FastBridge Fiber internet expecting lightning-fast speeds—no more falling behind during Zoom calls, slow-loading videos, or glitchy gaming sessions. So why does it sometimes feel… slower than promised?

Let’s clear things up.

Fiber internet is fast and reliable. In fact, it’s the best home internet service available today. But even with a top-tier plan, there are several reasons why you might not always experience the full advertised speed. Here’s what could be slowing things down:

Your Wi-Fi Setup Matters

The number one culprit for slow speeds? Your own Wi-Fi network. The further away you are from your router, or the more walls in between, the weaker the signal gets. Even if your fiber service is blazing fast, poor in-home Wi-Fi coverage can seriously limit what your devices receive.

Fix it: Try moving closer to your router, investing in a mesh Wi-Fi system, or contacting our support team and a tech can help you find the best place for the router in your home.

Your Devices Are Outdated

Not all devices are created equal. Outdated devices phones, laptops, or tablets may not be capable of handling gigabit speeds, even if your network is delivering them.

Fix it: Check your devices for updates or try running a speed test on a newer device to compare results.

Network Congestion & Background Use

Background internet use can slow down your connection, especially when many devices are online in your home. Even with fiber’s high bandwidth, too many devices—especially older ones that don’t support Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO)—can cause slowdowns. To improve performance, connect high-bandwidth devices directly to your router or mesh unit with an ethernet cable.

Fix it: Check who’s using what and consider scheduling heavy downloads or updates during off-peak times. You can use your Wi-Fi control app to find out what devices are on your network.

Running a VPN or Security Software

While important for privacy, VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) and some security software can limit your maximum speed by routing your traffic through extra servers.

Fix it: If speed is critical (like during a Zoom interview), temporarily disconnect from your VPN and see if that helps.

Outdated Network Equipment

Even if you upgraded to fiber internet, you may have opted to keep the modem or router you used with your old connection. Unfortunately, that equipment might not support the new speeds.

Fix it: Make sure your modem/router is compatible with fiber and rated for your plan’s speed.

What You Can Expect from Fiber

Fiber internet offers faster uploads, lower latency, and a more stable connection than cable or DSL. It’s perfect for households with multiple users, remote workers, gamers, and content creators. When everything’s optimized, from your router to your devices, you’ll get to experience the full power of your fiber connection.
