If you’ve been dealing with issues on YouTube TV or another live streaming service such as losing access to local channels or getting error messages about your location, we’re here to help.
These errors are almost always caused by how streaming platforms read your IP address, not by the quality or reliability of your fiber internet connection.
What’s an IP Address?
Your IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique set of numbers assigned to your home network. Streaming services use this to determine your location, so they can show your local news, sports, and region-specific content.
Sometimes, an IP address can be mistakenly associated with the wrong region. This can happen for a number of reasons including temporary rerouting, geo-database errors, or how a streaming service interprets IP data.
When this happens, streaming services may think you’re in a different city (or state), and you’ll lose access to the correct local content, even if your internet is working perfectly.
It’s important to understand that your fiber internet connection is working exactly as it should. As a fiber provider, we ensure the connection to your home is fast and reliable. But streaming platforms are responsible for how they assign, track, and verify location data tied to your IP address.
How You Can Fix Streaming Location Issues
Here are a few steps you can try to fix your location on streaming services:
1. Restart your modem/router.
This may refresh your IP address and help streaming services re-verify your correct location.
2. Log into your streaming service and update your location.
YouTube TV, Hulu Live, and others allow you to update your “Home Area” in your account settings.
3. Use a wired (Ethernet) connection instead of Wi-Fi.
In some cases, Wi-Fi or mobile hotspots can cause confusing geolocation of data.
4. Contact the streaming provider directly.
If the issue continues, your best option is to reach out to the streaming service’s support and request a location verification reset.
